What are MPAs

Marine protected areas, or MPAs, are defined areas in the ocean aiming to protect and restore marine life and habitats. MPAs are amongst the most used tools to help protect the ocean – they provide a shelter for marine life to recover and thrive.

In Portugal, there are more than 71 MPAs, and many of them provide excellent opportunities for a wide range of recreational activities like bird watching, swimming, SCUBA diving and many others.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

We are a lab group working in MARE-ISPA in Lisbon, Portugal. Our research is focused on understanding the impacts of human activities in marine communities and how marine protected areas can work as instruments promoting conservation of biodiversity and sustainable uses of the sea.
