What are MPAs

Marine protected areas, or MPAs, are defined areas in the ocean aiming to protect and restore marine life and habitats. MPAs are amongst the most used tools to help protect the ocean – they provide a shelter for marine life to recover and thrive.

In Portugal, there are more than 71 MPAs, and many of them provide excellent opportunities for a wide range of recreational activities like bird watching, swimming, SCUBA diving and many others.

THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT

The aim of this website is to increase the awareness and literacy on marine protected
areas centred around Europe. This is part of two larger projects titled ‘Performance
of marine protected areas in Portugal – an ocean country’ and “Making MPAs work
in Europe”, made possible by grants from the Waitt Foundation and from Ocean5.
